Why having headache after sport ?

Headaches, migraines after sport or cephalgia during exercise can have several causes :

  • - Lack of hydration, or dehydration
  • - Exercise-related hypertension
  • - Lack of sleep
  • - Significant stress
  • - Other potentially more serious causes
In most cases, post-effort headaches appear within hours of intense physical exertion and settle slowly but lasting, up to 24 or 48 hours after exertion.
If the headache arises violently and brutally during exercise, stop your sporting activity and go to the emergency room, as it could be a warning sign of a stroke.

The phenomenon has not been very studied by scientists, the most valid explanation would be intracranial hypertension. Indeed during physical exertion the blood pressure increases and can easily reach a value of 20/15.
During dehydration the phenomenon is equivalent, the liquid present in the organism decrease, it's possible that a vasoconstriction of blood vessels leads to an increase in blood pressure.
If migraines during exercise become more regular or more intense, do not hesitate to consult your doctor.

The appearance of pain is often done on the front of the forehead, between the eyes, as if you have pressure in the head and are not accompanied by nausea or vomiting.

How to prevent the onset of migraines ?

First you need to have a healthy lifestyle with good hydration (1.5 liters of water / per day), a balanced diet and good sleep. The stress level is also to be regulated and is one of the preventive reflexes to adopt.

If you are planning a interval workout, in the preceding hours significantly increase your hydration and have a sufficient snack to recharge your batteries. Avoid at all costs doing interval training with an empty stomach.
If possible, try to hydrate yourself during the session with an isotonic drink.
If it's hot and sunny, ditto, remember to hydrate yourself correctly and wear a light-colored cap to avoid overheating.

As soon as you come back from your workout, take your shower as cold as possible, it's not necessarily easy, if it's too hard to take it cold, favor the head, put it under cold water, in several time.

What to do when the headache sets in ?

When the headache is persistent, before it becomes more intense and to pass or relieve this migraine try these remedies :

  • - Isolate yourself in a peace room, in the dark
  • - Take a little nap sometimes stop or decrease the process
  • - Continue to hydrate regularly
  • - Recharge your batteries with a snack, a fruit or a cereal bar for example
  • - If you have not already done so, take a cold shower, especially at the head
If despite all these solutions, the headache is still present, you can try your usual medication as a treatment, but often the only way is to get a good night's sleep to stop it.
